- Rosso Colli Toscana Centrale IGT 2011
We are in the heart of the Chianti Rufina DOCG territory – "the highest Chianti of all", with hills ranging between 200 and 400 meters above sea level – an area consecrated to viticulture since Etruscan times and included in 1716 by Cosimo III de' Medici in his "Bando dei Vini".
Here, 18 km east of Florence, stretches a large agricultural estate owned since 1592 by an ancient family of Florentine Marquises. Of its 315 hectares, 19 are planted with vineyards and 32 with olive groves, while the remainder is cereals and woods. An imposing Renaissance villa, with its monumental park, dominates the valley and the farmed land of the estate.
The current owners – the 25th generation of a noble dynasty who have been producing wine and oil since the Renaissance – carry on the family tradition with passion and pride, striving for top-quality products and always respecting the integrity and natural beauty of the surroundings.
The result is unique wines, the fruit of a combination of ancient know-how with the most advanced winemaking techniques. Chianti Rufina, the local DOCG appellation, is an ever-popular choice; but at the same time, the estate's winemakers like to experiment with both local and international grape varieties. This is how the typically Tuscan Sangiovese, Trebbiano Toscano, and Colorino (this one coming from a native clone reproduced here for over 100 years) are integrated with vineyards planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and white Sauvignon grapes. These grapes, harvested by hand with care and passion, are vinified in the monumental cellars in the basement of the villa to produce some highly regarded white and red wines.
